Architectural Complex of Anshan Dongshan Guest House
Anshan, Liaoning, China
At 108 Dongfeng Street, in the historic Taiding district of Anshan, the Dongshan Guest House stands as a quiet witness to China's industrial rise. Built in 1952 on the grounds of a former Japanese-era park called Mountain Park, this 58,000-square-meter forested estate began as a sanctuary for Soviet technical experts. These engineers arrived to rebuild the war-torn Anshan Iron and Steel Plant, leaving their mark on the city's history.
The architecture reflects this international alliance. The core historic structures—the Main Building, Buildings 1, 2, and 3, and the VIP Building—feature a distinct blend of Soviet-style aesthetics and Eastern European villa design. Their thick brick-and-concrete walls mute the hum of the surrounding city, creating a serene sanctuary. Inside, classical interiors hosted generation after generation of state leaders, including Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Deng Xiaoping, earning the complex the title of "Anshan's Diaoyutai."
Today, the estate functions as a four-star hotel operated by the Ansteel Group, following a major renovation in 2020. Visitors walking through the 22,000 square meters of lawns encounter a sensory landscape of rockeries, splashing fountains, traditional Chinese pavilions, and quiet fish ponds. Open windows let in the fresh scent of pine wood and the clear chirping of birds. In December 2017, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology designated these historic buildings as core physical components of the Anshan Iron and Steel Plant National Industrial Heritage site. The guest house remains a living monument where the heavy labor of steel production meets the quiet elegance of a state parlor.
