Amusement Area of Kunming Zoo
Kunming, Yunnan, China
In 1953, builders began carving Kunming Zoo into the slopes of Yuantong Hill in Yunnan Province, opening its gates on New Year's Day in 1954. Today, the northern section of this park houses the Amusement Area, a space defined by the hum of mechanical gears and the scent of crushed blossoms.
An 800-meter-long path called Begonia Avenue connects this play zone to the animal exhibits. Repaved with colorful pervious asphalt in 2015, this path carries the footsteps of generations of local families. Walking along it, visitors reach a landscape where childhood recreation meets historical preservation.
In 1999, a major park-wide overhaul expanded these facilities. In July 2016, the park introduced Moses Happy World, an 1,800-square-metre children's amusement zone located near the main entrance. In January 2017, the park opened the Flying Elephant Theater, a 2,500-square-metre steel-frame membrane structure with 855 seats. This intersection of steel, nature, and civic memory remains a cornerstone of Kunming's urban life.
